Dick has many years of experience in agricultural extension, education, and research both as an American Baptist missionary and for the United Nations and the United States, particularly in Thailand.
This program will focus on a UN – USA project in Thailand to replace the growing of opium as a cash crop. Can we combat the great problems of drugs by eliminating the source, and how effective are UN and USA efforts,

Food Justice: Every Community's Concern
Join our panel of experts for a discussion of “Food Justice“ – communities exercising their rights to grow, sell and eat healthy food; food that is fresh, nutritious, affordable, culturally-appropriate and grown locally with consideration and deep caring for the well-being of the land, the workers, the animals, and all living creatures.
Our discussion will encompass not only local but global food issues. The global population is currently 7 billion, 850 million of whom go hungry daily. In addition, several hundred million children – a group referred to as the “hidden hungry” – are malnourished. If population forecasts of 9 billion by 2050 prove to be correct, how will everyone be fed? And what issues must be overcome to meet the challenge?

International Mother Language Day: Multilingual San Diego: Language Loss and Revitalization
Join us for a celebration of International Mother Language Day and a conversation with Dr. Ana Celia Zentella on "Multilingual San Diego: Language Loss and Revitalization."
This talk-event will focus on San Diego's multilingual heritage and will highlight the linguistic diversity and cultural perspectives of the city's bilingual communities.
It will inform about: the linguistic vitality of each community's language(s), the language revitalization that is fostered by the families and communities.
Ana Celia Zentella is one of the foremost researchers in what she has named "anthro-political linguistics". She is a central figure in the study of U.S. Latin and varieties of Spanish and English, Spanglish, and language socialization in Latin families, and a respected critic of the linguistic profiling facilitated by English-only laws and anti- bilingual education legislation. Ambassador Sallama Shaker, Full Clinical Professor of Middle East & Islamic Studies at Claremont Graduate University, will be speaking about International Women's Day as part of International Place's Lunch and Conversation Program.
The Lunch and Conversation Program is the one of the highlights of International Place’s programming schedule. Pairing an engaging international-themed presentation with delicious international cuisine, students, community members, faculty, and staff gather to listen, learn, as well as share their own perspectives on world events. Afghanistan Update
The Pomona Valley Chapter of UNA-USA has invited Nangy Ghafarshad to update members and guests on Afghanistan at its monthly meeting on March 18 in Porter Hall, Pilgrim Place. Mr. Ghafarshad will talk about current events in his native country, focusing on the withdrawal of NATO troops and the role of the UN.
Mr. Ghafarshad and his wife, Fahima, have owned and operated noted Walter’s Restaurant for 40 years. In 2009 -10 Ghafarshad served as Senior Cultural Advisor to the U.S. Department of Defense in Afghanistan. This service, in part, led to his book, “To Lift a Mirror … For What You’ve “, in which he describes the changes in the country of his birth. |

Humanitarian Action on Behalf of Children (HABC) is a project connected with IMAHelps (which organizes medical and surgical missions to many countries around the world) and the Nicaraguan Relief Society. The project’s goal is to impact the infant mortality rate in Nicaragua through direct aid to mothers of newborns.

Registration for the 2014 UNA-USA Annual Meeting will be available soon, so we hope you will take advantage of reduced registration fees!
The Annual Meeting brings together members from across the country for skills trainings, issue briefings, networking opportunities, and capacity-building. Each year, the meeting culminates with Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill; last year, more than 120 meetings took place between UNA-USA members and their members of Congress discussing the importance of a strong U.S.-UN relationship.

“Climate Science Update”
Dr. Joshua Fisher is a Climate Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), will present a talk on “Climate Change: The Science & The Challenge”. Josh graduated from UC- Berkeley, and did postdoctoral research and teaching at Oxford University before joining JPL. He conducted research in the Amazon, the Andes and the Arctic using satellite sensing and supercomputer modeling, and is widely published in the field.

Easily accessible from the 110 freeway- heading South toward the Port of Los Angeles:
· Exit Harbor Blvd
· Take exit 1A towards the 47 Vincent Thomas Bridge – this is also the exit for Harbor Blvd. and the Historic Waterfront. Stay right and do not get on the bridge!
· Turn right onto Harbor Blvd for 1.3 miles – at that point Harbor Blvd turns into Miner Street.
· At the intersection of Miner and 22nd street turn RIGHT … no matter what your GPS tells you!
· Go about 500 ft. and the driveway to CRAFTED is on your right, directly before the 22nd Street park.
CRAFTED is the second warehouse (behind the one that is being remodeled). Ask for parking directions at the entrance kiosk. Park as close as you can to the rear warehouse, the meeting will be held in Phase 3 of the CRAFTED warehouse. The CRAFTED marketplace is in Phase 1. ★" BEYOND RIGHT AND WRONG: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness "
The Film looks at areas of conflict around the world and asks what it takes to forgive, and what it takes to ask for forgiveness under the most difficult of circumstances. Stories include the conflict in Northern Ireland, Israel and Palestine’s dispute over Jerusalem, and genocide in Rwanda. What remains singular among these terrible incidents is not the justice served or severity of the atrocities, but rather the level of dialogue and discourse reached between both perpetrators and victims.

16th World Conference in Education
Be part & Lend your voice to the discussion on Integrating Education for A Lasting Culture of Peace & Care of Planet Earth
The World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCII) is hosting its 16 th World Conference on Education for the very first time in the United States of America. It was born in 1970, at the close of a world conference organized by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) in Asilomar, California, USA.
WCCI’s world conferences are not ordinary educational conferences. As an active NGO with consultative status with United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), WCCI has maintained a close relationship with the UN as it particularly relates to the Culture of Peace and the Care for Planet Earth.
The Organization believes that education should give equal attention on environment and peaceful relations among the members of the human family. In maintaining this kind of philosophy and mission the organization had hosted – since its first world conference in 1975 – notable speakers such as Paulo Frierre (esteemed author of the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed), Johan Galtung (Norway’s pride and founder of the International Peace Institute) and former UN Undersecretary Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury.
UNA-USA San Diego is proud to partner with WCCI in its endeavor for a comprehensive integration of education. Afghan Dental Relief's Plans
Afghan Dental Relief Project has brought modern dentistry to Afghanistan , a country where most of the population cannot access dental care and often die from problems with their teeth. ADRP is rebuilding the technical infrastructure in dental care in Afghanistan, training its first dental hygienists, assistants, and laboratory technicians, and building free clinics so that Afghans can find treatment.
The good news is that the ADRP project in Kabul is being expanded to include a new clinic to teach dentists how to do better dentistry. Students from our dental technician school will be able to train with modern equipment and techniques. The clinic will eventually treat non-Afghans who normally go to Dubai to the dentist, and the patients will willingly pay the fee that they would be charged in Dubai. These fees will make possible the funding of free dental clinics and schools all over Afghanistan, and will play a major role in rebuilding the missing technical infrastructure in Afghanistan. Help Afghans access better health care and education by providing this new clinic!!!
Proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will benefit the much-needed operations of the ADRP

MDG #3 – GENDER EQUALITY
Primary Education for Afghan Girls
In Afghanistan, the life expectancy for women is 44 years. The literacy rates are 31% for men & 15% for women. 57% of Afghan girls marry before the legal age of 16. The average Afghan woman will bear 7.4 children, one of whom won’t live to see his or her first birthday. In Afghanistan, access to primary education can transform a girl’s future.
In January 2002, two Quakers, Edith Cole and Joe Franco from Orange Grove Friends Meeting, traveled to Pakistan, hoping to find a way to help some of the more than 2 million Afghan refuges displaced by the years of war and invasion. The United Nations Commissioner for Refugees directed them to a refugee camp in the Peshawar area. At that time, the girls in the camp had no access to education. There are now 2 elementary schools serving 600 girls. These two Afghan Girls Schools are locally funded and managed by Pasadena area volunteers. We invite you to come hear about this extraordinary project and the difference primary education is making for these students.
Our featured speaker, Dr.Betsy K. Emerick began working with the Afghan Girls School eight years ago and has made six trips to Pakistan to oversee the project. Her passion for education is evident in a career that spans all levels: K-12 through Higher Education. Dr. Emerick has a PhD in Comparative Literature from UCLA and has taught everything from second grade to middle school to Italian and English/American literature at Pitzer, Reed, Pomona, and Dickinson Colleges. She taught English to Italians in Rome and Italian to Americans at Scripps College. In 2001, she took early retirement from Dickinson College where she was Vice-President for Student Affairs and Associate Professor of English.

Challenges for Recent and Historic Refugees in the Middle East Documentary Night
I-House Faculty Fellow for Fall 2014, Dr. Wael Al-Delaimy, will present 2 documentary films on refugees in the Middle East followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Al-Delaimy, Professor of Epidemiology and Chief of the Division of Global Health at the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD.

The films are:
ZA’ATARI REFUGEE CAMP (2013) When it opened, Za'atari had just 100 families. Today, it has about 120,000 residents. Located 18 miles south of the Syrian border, it's the fourth largest city in Jordan and the second largest refugee camp in the world.
SOMEONE LIKE ME (2011) Funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO), the 24-minute film sheds light on the challenges and aspirations of young Palestine refugees growing up in Lebanon.

Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and the United Nations Association Pasadena Chapter invite you to Pasadena's 5th Annual Human Rights Day Celebration! This event will take place on December 10th, 2014 at 7:00pm in the Donald Wright Auditorium at the Pasadena Central Library.
This year we will be celebrating the 2015 International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies, and the positive impacts the science and applications of light have on energy, education, agriculture, and health for people around the world.
Our keynote speaker, Elena Christopoulos, will be discuss how renewable energy sources offer us ways to harness energy without compromising our health, climate, and economy. Attendees will learn innovative and inexpensive ways to reduce their energy bills, and gain valuable insight into the important of light locally and globally.
