The United Nations decided to put the spotlight on female circumcision by calling for a day of "Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)."  On Feb. 6, 2015 they held a conference that was paneled by 3 African women, of which 2 had undergone this brutal practice in Gambia and Somalia.  They decided to fight so future generations of girls could live without fear and pain throughout the world including the USA.   Young women and little girls are pressured into this procedure by people following superstitious, non-scientific beliefs and traditions.   Female circumcision prevents women from experiencing sexual pleasure and therefore keeps them in psychological bondage. This practice results in millions of woman having special problems giving birth.

Most of the women in Egypt have undergone FGM.   You will also see a very short film on young girls in Egypt forming resistance to this brutal domination.  The idea is to save existing girls and woman from going through this brutal procedure and making sure it doesn’t happen to their daughters and other people’s children.

Please come to our United Nations Assn. event to show solidarity with these brave reformers.

"An Update on Global Efforts to Combat HIV /AIDS" - the monthly program of Pomona Valley UNA-USA

Presented by Harvey Mudd Professor Karl Haushalter

According UNAIDS, an estimated 35 million people were living with HIV as of 2013, more than anytime in history.  Encouragingly, the rate of new HIV infections has fallen by 38% since 2001 and by 58% for children during the same time period.  Likewise, the deaths from HIV related causes have decreased by 35% since the global peak in 2005.   This talk will describe the scientific discoveries and political efforts that have made this progress possible, as well as explore new advances that have the potential to move us closer to the end of the epidemic.

Dr. Karl Haushalter holds a B.A. in chemistry from Rice University and a Ph.D. in chemical biology from Harvard University.  He completed his postdoctoral studies as a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Fellow at the University of California San Diego.  Dr. Haushalter is currently an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biology and the Associate Dean of Research and Experiential Learning at Harvey Mudd College, where he has been on the faculty since 2003. The focus of his research and teaching is the biochemistry of HIV.  Dr. Haushalter serves on the board of directors of Foothill AIDS Project and holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the City of Hope National Medical Center, where he is a collaborator on an interdisciplinary project to develop a gene therapy approach to treating HIV-AIDS.

WATER WISDOM with Leigh Adams

Practical, cross-cultural approaches to harvesting, utilizing and conserving water.

We are currently faced with decisions we must make regarding water.  We are challenged by the ongoing drought, radically depleted groundwater, and our own cultural biases. Perhaps a look at how water is used in other cultures may offer some valuable clues to improving our local systems and overcoming these persistent, contemporary difficulties with WATER.

Leigh Adams, the LA County Arboretum's Artist-in-Residence, teacher, and garden designe r, is currently curating and developing The Crescent Farm – A Living Demonstration of Water Conservation and Sustainable Landscapes at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. Leigh will present a storyteller's approach to thinking about, teaching, harvesting and conserving water.

You will also have an opportunity to see some unique approaches taking place in our own neighborhoods.

An Evening with Marilee Scaff - “A life of Learning and Justice.”

There is hardly an area of community service Marilee Scaff has left untouched in her nearly 72 years living in Claremont. There’s her devotion to Rancho Santa Botanic Garden for example. Ms. Scaff is entering her 32nd  year as a volunteer at the local botanic garden, where she spurs on her never-ending curiosity with native wildflowers, a passion developed as a young child. She has also made a name for herself with the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, serving at both the local and county level.

Asking her to reflect on her other areas of involvement over the years draws up a long list from the Community Friends of International students and the United Nations Association, and she mentions each name with a devote level of interest.

Perhaps Ms. Scaff found the fountain of life in her healthy dose of involvement because this 99-year-old is sharp as a whip with walker in hand at city council meetings, Sustainable Claremont and League of Women Voters gatherings. She continues to be Claremont’s resident expert in water rights, though she would humbly dispute the title.

Free and open to the public. Contact:  katieg@surfside.net  Refreshments will be served.

Grandson of President Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Visits San Diego to Celebrate

The United Nations Association of the United States of America, San Diego Chapter (UNA-USA San Diego) - the local Ambassador to and for the United Nations - is celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations.

The community is invited to a Gala Luncheon on Saturday, October 24th, 2015 from 11 AM to 2 PM, in the Ballroom of the Prado Restaurant in Balboa Park. The luncheon will be hosted by Co-Chair Joanne Tawfilis, U.S. National Commissioner to UNESCO, the Honorary Chairs Sherri Lightner, Council President for the City of San Diego, and Lora Fisher, President of the La Jolla Rotary Club the San Diego community.

In noting the importance of the United Nations, former Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld once stated “the United Nations was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell.” Formed after World War II as an alternative to the balance-of-power politics, the UN looks back at seventy years of creating an institutional architecture that fosters international cooperation and consensual global norms as well as establishes universally applicable rules for the benefit of all. “For most of us here in the United States, unless we have been the beneficiary of the UN’s incredible humanitarian efforts the significance of this milestone anniversary might not be apparent” said Bettina Hausmann, President and CEO of the local UN Association. “San Diego with its vibrant refugee community, however, brings home the very core of the UN mission: to provide solutions to ‘problems without passports,’ in short security concerns that impact us all and can no longer be solved unilaterally”. Community partner and long term supporter of the UN, Rotary International is sharing “a fascinating history” remarks Lora Fisher, President of the La Jolla Rotary Club “a long and successful partnership based on similar visions for a more harmonious and unimpaired world”. Ms. Fisher expressed her excitement to join this year’s commemoration.

The celebratory luncheon on October 24th also represents a wonderful trifecta of events for 2015 including: the seventieth birthday of the United Nations, the sixty-ninth anniversary of the United Nations Association of San Diego, and Balboa Park's centennial celebration. The visit of President Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s grandson, Ford Roosevelt marks an important and historical return to the San Diego Chapter after sixty-two years. In 1953, his grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt opened the new Headquarter of the UN Association at the House of Hospitality in beautiful Balboa Park; the return of a family member to the very spot and heart of the organization is a great privilege and inspiration to the community.

“I’m very honored to be part of the 70th anniversary and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) celebration with the San Diego Chapter of the UN Association” said Ford Roosevelt in an phone call earlier this week. As the guest of honor, Ford is presenting Dr. Dee Aker, Director of the Institute for Peace and Justice at USD with the annual Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights award. “Dr. Aker embodies the values and moral imperative of the work of my grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt. We need more champions of Human Rights active in our communities today.”
